About Us

Prairie Rose Outfitters – Premier Guided Waterfowl Hunts, Unmatched Hospitality, and the Experience of a Lifetime.

Who we are

Located in the heart of Saskatchewan, Prairie Rose Outfitters provides you with the most exciting waterfowl hunt of your life. We’ve been operating since 1995 and continually bring in award-winning – first-class guides to get you engaged in the most action possible.

Since we are located in the north, where most waterfowl start their migration, the birds are less pressured, hungry and come in from every angle! This makes us the best choice for waterfowl hunting, better than anywhere else. Saskatchewan waterfowl hunting has been described as the “tornadoes of ducks,” with many of our experienced customers saying this is the “most birds I’ve ever seen.”

As Saskatchewan’s best, most experienced and highest-rated waterfowl outfitter in Canada, there is a reason we have such a high return rate of groups that visit us – PRO simply has more to offer!

CHAMPETRE TRAVEL INFORMATION

Located only 30 minutes east of Saskatoon, the land in this area is very hilly, with many potholes that hold large local duck populations. The hunting for Canada Geese is the most popular, with good snow goose hunting in the afternoon as you move east from camp. The camp offers two completely different hunting opportunities.

Travel to this location is best through Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, connecting most major airlines. You will need to arrange a rental vehicle for the duration of your stay. A 4WD truck or van is highly recommended.

Prior to leaving, please confirm your travel arrangements and time of arrival.

Directions:

Saskatoon To Prairie Rose Outfitters – Champetre Camp Location

Departing Saskatoon, 20 miles east on Hwy 5 from Saskatoon, turn left and go north on St.Denis access. (If you are on highway 5 and reach Range Road 3042, you’ve gone about 1 mile too far). Then north through St. Denis an additional 2 miles. Then take a left turn at the Champetre sign. The lodge is 1/2 mile west on the south side of the road. You will see the saloon once you turn in.

Why is Champetre County Famous for hunting?

Having a consistent and reliable population of birds is the top factor. This is due to a combination of geographic location, farming practice, and terrain. There is an abundance of pea farming and barley farming, the favored food source for waterfowl. The terrain is slightly rolling hills, creating pothole sloughs in every field, which is heaven for ducks. The geographic location is also central in North Americas’ main migration flyaways.

On the main migration route, when birds encounter both an abundance of food and an abundance of roosting water, they pause their migration to rest and feed for several days to several weeks. Through the course of a fall hunting season, we will see six to seven “migration hops” where a group of birds (say 200,000 to 500,000) all decide to push on to the next stop point. At the same time, a batch of new birds come in from the north, typically within the same day. During these “migration hops,” the bird feeding locations change significantly from one set of the fields to another.

The last factor in making Champetre County famous for waterfowl hunting is Prairie Rose Outfitters. We are knowledgeable in the area. We know the landowners by name and handshake, and we invest time and effort into the hunters on the fields where the birds will be. We have shot 3 TV shows in the past three years (with Ducks Unlimited TV and Ram Outdoorsman), and we are proud of the high return rate among our client base.

Welcome to the Quill Lakes – Dafoe Camp

Quill Lakes is home to some of the largest Geese, Duck and Sand Hill Crane populations on the prairies. Prairie Rose Outfitters is located on the west side of the Quill Lakes in one of Saskatchewan’s largest migratory flyaways. There is an opportunity to hunt most game birds available on the prairies right in our backyard. These include Sandhill Cranes, Ducks, Snow Geese, White-fronted Geese (speckle bellies), and less and greater Canada geese. Beginning in 2004, Upland birds (ie. Sharp-tailed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge) were added to the list. Bird populations for the coming hunting season look very positive.

Snow geese can be hunted in the morning and afternoon in the Quill lakes region in Saskatchewan. Electronic calls for Snow goose hunting were approved in Saskatchewan back in 2002. Electronic calls, rotary machines, and variable action decoys have all increased the consistency of morning and afternoon hunting for snow geese. Afternoon hunting for snow geese is allowed all season long in the Quill lakes region of Saskatchewan. The hunting opportunity of a lifetime is yours to enjoy on the Quill lakes with Prairie Rose Outfitters.

We usually hunt within a 20 Mile (35km) radius of our lodge. Most times, our morning drive to the hunt is less than 10 minutes. The area around the west side of the Quill lakes is surrounded by agricultural land. The wheat, barley, and pea crops provide the necessary ingredients needed to attract them migrating waterfowl. We are the first to see the migrating waterfowl; they are naive about decoys and blinds entering the Quill Lakes area.

This is the beginning of their migration. The new hatch of Snow and Ross Geese provides at least four weeks of the best hunting you will ever experience. There is an excess of 1/2 million geese flying out each morning just on our side of the Big Quill Lake alone.

This area has been home to Prairie Rose Outfitters for the last 30 years. Owner Craig Rath is a 4th generation farmer in the area. He has maintained working relationships with the farmers in the area who welcome hunters due to the tremendous impact this many migrating geese and ducks have on their crops. Managing access to these fields does ensure good hunting for everyone is what we do.
