This Spring snow goose season was one of most challenging seasons in the last 10 years. We would normally start the season in mid April and go to mid May, but this year we experienced multiple weather events. First, we had snow during the week of April 20th which pushed the birds back south across the snow line. We decided to delay our season start and ended up re-scheduling 2 groups during that time. The following week we continued to get snow and rain and had us hunting in less than ideal weather. We hunted in the mud and snow at -6 C temps. On our first morning hunt, we killed 60 snows on back boards and white suits in a pea field with a good wind.
From that point on we killed 30 to 40 snows in morning hunts for the week of April 27th. The weather continued to improve, and the migration sped up the week of May 1st. The migration had compressed when the geese got stuck behind the snow line back in April. When it warmed up we had a massive migration influx for about a week until it settled down. More than 1 million birds were between Dafoe and Watson, but in fields that were too wet to hunt. Yikes! So many birds, but tough to get to.
May 5th to 12th we started shooting 100 plus birds each day as the migration settled and the geese pushed in and out.
We hunted Dafoe until May 12th, then went North to Melfort for a few days hunting with guides and friends. On the way home on the 15th, hundreds of thousands of geese were still south of Melfort and several good shoots remained. So many geese and so little time…
The 2026 Spring season is over and will be remembered as one of the tougher seasons: with difficult weather combined with one of the most compressed migrations in the last 10 years.
If you’re up for the challenge and only have time to hunt geese in the spring because you’re busy with ducks or deer in the fall, come up and give it a try. We have some availability for Spring 2027 and will also be opening our new lodge in Spring 2027, so no better time to check it out!
