Early October Hunting Update from Prairie Rose Outfitters – Birds Are Rolling
The early October season is in full swing here at Prairie Rose Outfitters, and the guides have been busy running groups every day since September 1st.
Bird Numbers Are Extraordinary
We’re seeing high numbers across the board. Ducks are stacking in the potholes, Snow Geese are filling the skies, and Dark Geese are starting to make their presence known. Canada Geese, both big and little, are showing up consistently, and Specks are starting to push in as well.
Our mornings are mostly combo hunts, pairing ducks and Snow Geese with some Dark Geese mixed in. Afternoons are all about Snow Geese and whatever else comes in. Duck numbers are through the roof- clients are hitting limits almost every morning and then switching to Snow Geese for action-filled afternoons.
Some highlights from the field:
- One group of 5 hunters shot 40 ducks by 8 a.m.
- Another 6-person group took 120 birds in one morning, combining ducks and Snow Geese
Migration and Weather
Migration is strong. Birds are showing up every day, and fresh flocks are pushing in constantly. We haven’t seen a big push out yet, so there’s plenty of action still to come.
The weather has been warm during the day – highs in the 70s but nights and early mornings are dipping into the low 30s. Once the sun hits, things heat up quickly, making for perfect hunting conditions.
Looking Ahead
The season is still young, and peak migration is just around the corner. There are still some dates available for 2026, so if you want in on a high-volume, early-season hunt next year, now’s the time to book.
