Early Season Waterfowl Hunting Report from Prairie Rose Outfitters: Big Numbers, Even Bigger Opportunity
Strong Hatch = More Birds in the Sky
The hatch this year has been incredible. There are unusually high numbers of Snow Geese and ducks. You can see it in the color of the flocks – the young birds stand out as a darker grey compared to the clean white adults. These juvenile Snow Geese don’t have the experience to pick apart decoy spreads, which means better hunting conditions and more action for our hunters.
Combine that with the sheer number of Mallards, Pintails, and Puddle Ducks staging in the fields and potholes, and it’s shaping up to be one of the best fall hunting seasons in recent memory.
New Opportunity: Diver Duck Hunts on Quill Lakes
On top of the traditional field hunts, we’re excited to be offering another opportunity this year: Diver Hunts. Unlike Puddle Ducks that feed in fields, divers raft up on the big water. And with the Quill Lakes, one of the largest bodies of water in Saskatchewan, right in our backyard, this hunt is a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Canvasbacks, Redheads, Scaup, and other diver duck species have been holding strong on the lakes, and the hunts have been producing excellent shooting. It’s a great add-on if you’re looking to mix things up and take home a wider variety of waterfowl.
Looking Ahead: Peak Migration is on the Horizon
Here’s the exciting part- as good as it’s been, the real push is still to come. We’re just getting into the early stages of the Snow Goose migration in Saskatchewan, and the big waves of Canada Geese, ducks, and cranes haven’t even fully arrived yet.
Everyday we’re seeing fresh flocks filtering down from the north, and once the weather shifts, the skies over Saskatchewan will be packed. That means even more action, bigger Canada Goose hunts, and the kind of waterfowl shooting that keeps hunters coming back year after year.
